The shofar helps us focus on Rosh Hashanah as the day we recognize Hashem as King and are judged for the coming year. He encourages us to pray not only for our physical needs, but also for spiritual growth and greater Torah understanding. Rav Saadia Gaon explains that the shofar also reminds us of teshuva, Matan Torah, the Akedah, the Beis Hamikdash, judgment, Mashiach, and techiyas hameisim.
